TreeSong Nature Awareness and Retreat Center will host a virtual class, “Birding by Ear: Resident Birds” from 9 to 10:30 a.m. March 25. Instructor Laura Whittemore will help students identify birds by their distinct voices. Meet some of the widespread songbirds of the Northwest, hear their songs and get tips on how to listen to birdsongs to become more confident in bird identification. Practice around your home and supplement with online resources. This class focuses on local birds such as song sparrows, Bewick’s wren and spotted towhees.
Whittemore has taught classes for Audubon Society of Portland and previously worked for Backyard Bird Shop. She holds a BA in Biology from Lewis and Clark College and has traveled in the U.S.A., Australia, South Africa and Antarctica in search of birds. Registration is required at treesongnatureawareness.org/class-registration/bberesident23. The class fee ranges from $10 to $20. Email hello@treesongnatureawareness.org for a BIPOC discount.
