St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1309 Franklin St., Vancouver, will host “Remembering James Payne: A Retrospective Art Exhibit” from May 3-8. The opening reception is 5 to 8 p.m. May 3 at the church. Jimmy Payne, who passed away in 2023, was well-known for his larger scale, mosaic artwork. Several of Payne’s collectors are loaning his mosaics for this retrospective exhibit. Payne developed a technique for creating mosaics using upcycled ceramic mugs, which he would break into small, colorful tiles. The tiles were carefully installed with hand-mixed grouts using repurposed picture frames. Payne’s work frequently depicted local landmarks like the Old Apple Tree, Beacon Rock, and Multnomah Falls. Payne sold his work at the Vancouver Farmers Market and his works were exhibited at the former North Bank Artists Gallery and Sixth Street Gallery. Payne also donated many works to charity auctions, friends and family.
