Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

The Oregon Historical Society will partner with KALO Hawaiian Civic Club to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with free museum admission and a day of activities from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 18. This event is presented in partnership with Oregon Rises Above Hate, a coalition of people and organizations who give voice to Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities. In addition to educational videos and a craft corner hosted by KALO, the event will also feature two Papa Ulana Launiu (Weaving with Coconut Leaves) workshops, a traditional practice of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander people. These two-hour workshops led by Maui Grown 808, LLP offer an opportunity for community members to learn about the artwork, its history and its meaning from artists traveling to Oregon from Lahaina, Maui. Each participant will leave with a hat. These workshops cost $25 to attend and are open to ages twelve and older. Register at ohs.org/ulana. The schedule of events is as follows:

• 10:15 a.m.: Oli and Opening Protocol
  An oli is an Indigenous Hawaiian chant, a traditional way to begin Hawaiian events
• 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.: Ulana Workshop 1
• 11 a.m.–3 p.m.: Keiki Corner Crafts
  Keiki (child) crafts geared towards visitors under 12
• 12:30 p.m.–1:30 p.m.: Educational Videos
  Watch educational videos about Hawaiian history and culture.
• 1:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m.: Ulana Workshop 2
