Forest Fire Lookouts Exhibit at North Clark Historical Museum

North Clark Historical Museum, 21416 N.E. 399^th St. in Amboy’s renovated 1910 United Brethren Church, presents the Forest Fire Lookout Exhibit, on display throughout August. The museum will offer a free presentation at 2 p.m. Aug. 27 by Chuck Whitten, a former Forest Service employee who worked in the lookouts during the summer.

Lookouts were used in the early 1900’s to spot forest fires and relay the information back to a dispatcher.  The living conditions were primitive and the hike to the lookout was an adventure.  During WWII, they were used as Aircraft Warning Stations to watch for enemy planes flying over the area.

The Museum is open the second and fourth Saturday of the month from noon to 4 p.m. Tours are available upon request. The museum is wheelchair accessible and has air conditioning. Admission is free.  Donations are welcome.

Raffle tickets will be available for $1 each for “Wild Flowers,” a quilt made by the Chelatchie Quilters. The quilt raffle is the museum’s annual fundraiser. For more information, please contact 360-247-5800 and leave a message or email museumnch88@gmail.com.
