Second Mile Marketplace and Food Hub, located at 11819 N.E. Highway 99 Suite C, will host a tomato canning and salsa workshop from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 30.
Tomatoes are great to eat fresh when they’re in season, and they are terrific for summer canning! Preserving tomatoes is easy, but also can be unsafe if not done correctly. Participants in this small group, hands-on class will learn the details of safely preserving tomatoes that can be used in soups, stews, chili, casseroles and much more.
Salsas combine tomatoes with other ingredients that need to be carefully considered for a safe product. Participants will learn how to safely make salsas and the limitations of creating your own salsa recipe.
As a bonus, learn what to do with the tomato skins rather than tossing them in a compost pile or down the drain!
