Claudia Carter and Philemon Reid exhibit at Clark College Bookstore

March 8 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

In honor of Black History Month, the Vancouver NAACP produced an exhibit in the Clark College Bookstore window (located in Gaiser Hall on Clark’s main campus at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way) featuring two Black Vancouver artists, Claudia Carter and Philemon Reid.

Reid was a self-taught artist. Born in Eatonton, Georgia in 1945, he spent nine years in the service, went to night college, and worked many years for the Bonneville Power Administration as an engineering technician. He settled in Vancouver and raised a family. Reid was a full-time artist at the time of his passing in June 2009. Reid’s art has been featured in numerous art shows and exhibits. His work is currently on view as part of the Portland Art Museum’s “Black Artists of Oregon” exhibit at the museum until March 17. The 10 charcoal drawing prints in the exhibit are Reid’s early works given to the Vancouver NAACP in 1982.
