TreeSong Nature Awareness Center will offer an online course, “Pacific Northwest Woodpeckers,” from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 16 led by instructor Laura Whittemore. Woodpeckers are one of the most specialized birds in North America, and the Pacific Northwest hosts as many as 12 species, depending on habitat. They lives their lives in and on trees, rarely bothering with the ground, and function as architects of the forest through their drilling and carving talents. Students will learn to identify them through field marks and voice plus learn about their life histories, habitat requirements and partnerships with other wildlife. Registration is $10 to $20 at treesongnatureawareness.org/class-registration/pnwwoodpeckers23.
