Science on Tap: How Road Ecology Shapes the Future

September 13, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$15 – $45

The next Science on Tap at the Kiggins Theatre is 7 p.m. Sept. 13. The speaker is Ben Goldfarb, award-winning author of “Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter.” In Goldfarb’s most recent book, Crossings: How Road Ecology Is Shaping the Future of Our Planet, he delves into the new science of road ecology to explore how roads have altered the natural world.

Some 40 million miles of roadways encircle the earth, but we tend to regard them only as infrastructure for human convenience. A million animals are killed by cars each day in the US alone, and roads fragment wildlife populations into inbred clusters, disrupt migration for creatures from antelope to salmon, allow invasive plants to spread, and even bend the arc of evolution itself.

Tickets are $15 to $45, available at kigginstheatre.com. Learn more at scienceontaporwa.org/events/kiggins_sep_13_roads/. Recorded live shows are available to Patreon members after the event.
