St. John Lutheran Church will host a Longest Night service on the date of the winter solstice, Dec. 21, at 11005 N.E. Highway 99, Vancouver. The contemplative service, which starts at 7 p.m., is geared toward those who experience grief during the holidays. The evening will include live music, prayers and scripture readings. The sanctuary will be dimly lit so that people may feel comfortable crying. Towards the end of the service, the congregation will come forward, light a candle, then move to the altar, which is filled with small unlit candles, each symbolizing a burden. People can light one or more of the altar candles to symbolize how Christ brings light to even the darkest hour. The service is free and open to anyone.
