The Water Resources Education Center, 4600 S.E. Columbia Way, Vancouver, will offer a free class, “Animal Tracking Basics: Life Along the Water’s Edge,” from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 19. The free class, which is designed for beginners to enhance their animal tracking skills, will be held outside, rain or shine, and is suitable for ages 10 and older. Please leave pets at home. Registration is required at cityofvancouver.us/publicworks/webform/animal-tracking-basics-life-along-water’s-edge.
The wetlands near the Water Center are home to many Columbia River animals. Discover how to interpret the clues left behind by learning foot morphology and gaits of common wildlife residents. Expect to go slowly, often standing in one place, as the group deciphers the tracks we find. Plan to walk off-trail in sandy areas and with uneven terrain or mud. These areas will also be exposed to full sun.
