Raku Animal Maskmaking Workshop

Mosaic Arts Alliance will host a two-day raku animal mask-making workshop from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 at Russell Ford’s studio, 610 E. 19th St., Vancouver. This sculptural workshop is open to all levels of experience. Students will work with clay and found or related objects. Students will create masks on Oct. 29 and return to glaze and fire their masks on Nov. 5.

After making masks, a week is needed for the sculptures to dry and to be pre-fired. The raku firing itself will be an all-afternoon affair assisted by experts. Glazing, firing and cooling typically takes a few hours. Masks will be fired in the order that students complete glazing. It’s helpful but not necessary to pick an animal before class.  The instructor will guide students to create their masks with the highest possibility of a successful firing. Found objects may be incorporated into the design to add after the firing.
