Volunteer with staff from the city of Vancouver from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 16, Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, to remove English ivy at Marine Park, 4501 S.E. Columbia Way, Vancouver. This ivy pull will be followed by a short nature walk through the riparian bottomland forests of the park, where participants will learn about native ecosystems and the role of non-native species in the urban landscape.
The event will happen rain or shine. Training, gloves, tools and a hot lunch will be provided. Ivy pulling will take place primarily off established trails, and the terrain may be uneven. Activities will include cutting ivy off tree trunks, bending over to pull ivy from the soil and spreading bark mulch. Youth under 18 must bring a signed minor consent form. Registration is required at cityofvancouver.us/cmo/page/mlk-day-service-root-out.
